What is Biophilia?
Biophilia is the human instinct to connect with nature. The word was coined by biologist E.O. Wilson in 1984, but the feeling itself is something most people already know that sense of calm you get sitting near a tree, or how a room with plants just feels different from one without.
It’s not just psychological either. Research shows that people in spaces with natural elements have lower stress levels, better focus, and lower blood pressure. In cities like Karachi or Lahore, where most of us live in concrete apartments with little greenery nearby, indoor plants are often the closest most people get to nature on a daily basis.
Keeping plants isn’t just about decoration. There’s something real happening when you’re around them and the air-quality benefits are a bonus on top of that.
What Plants are Best for Indoor Air Quality?
The 17 best plants for improving indoor air quality spider plant, snake plant, peace lily, aloe vera, Boston fern, English ivy, rubber plant, golden pothos, bamboo palm, Dracaena, areca palm, gerbera daisy, philodendron, weeping fig, Chinese evergreen, florist’s chrysanthemum, and Warneckei were all identified in NASA’s 1989 Clean Air Study, led by Dr. Bill Wolverton of NASA’s John C. What made these plants stand out is that they work in low-light conditions. Most of us don’t have perfectly sunlit rooms. These plants don’t need them. They filter out toxic airborne pollutants including benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene even in the kind of dim, sealed indoor environments that many Pakistani homes and offices actually look like.
Shaun Murphy, who runs Indoor Sun Shoppe in Seattle, makes a good point about choosing plants: learn what each one needs before you buy it. “All of these plants can be grown successfully when conditions are right,” Murphy says. Water needs, soil type, and light requirements are different for each. Getting that wrong is usually why plants die.
1. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum/elatum)
The spider plant removes carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and xylene from indoor air and is one of the easiest plants on this list to keep alive. It has long, arching green-and-white striped leaves and produces small offshoots called spiderettes that dangle from the mother plant and can be cut off and repotted.
Spider plants do fine in indirect light, don’t need daily watering, and are non-toxic to pets and children. 2. Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata)
The snake plant converts carbon dioxide (CO₂) into oxygen at night which most plants don’t do making it one of the better choices for a bedroom. Most plants only photosynthesise during daylight hours. The snake plant keeps working after dark.
Also called Variegated Sansevieria or Dracaena trifasciata ‘Laurentii’, it filters formaldehyde, benzene, xylene, and trichloroethylene. It survives low light, hot temperatures, and irregular watering which makes it well-suited to Pakistan’s long, dry summers. It’s one of those plants that almost prefers being ignored. Water it once every two to three weeks and put it somewhere with indirect light. It will be fine.
3. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)
The peace lily filters ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene from indoor air one of the broadest pollutant-removal ranges of any plant on the NASA list. It also produces white flowers, which most air-purifying plants don’t.
Peace lilies grow well in low light, which makes them useful in bathrooms, interior rooms, and hallways places in Pakistani homes that often have no windows at all. They do need consistent moisture; let the soil dry a little between waterings, but don’t let it go completely dry for long. One thing to know: peace lilies are mildly toxic to cats and dogs, so keep them somewhere pets can’t reach.
4. Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis miller/Aloe vera)

Aloe vera needs bright, indirect light and very little water. It stores moisture in its thick leaves and will rot if overwatered which is the most common way people kill aloe. 5. Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata)

Rubber plants prefer bright, indirect light and should be watered only when the top layer of soil feels dry. Overwatering is the main way rubber plants fail. 8. Golden Pothos/Devil’s Ivy (Epipremnum aureum)
Golden pothos removes benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, and carbon monoxide from indoor air and is, by most accounts, the hardest plant to kill on this list. Also called Devil’s Ivy, it grows fast and trails naturally from shelves and pots, with heart-shaped leaves in green and yellow. It works well in offices, living rooms, and any space that doesn’t get much natural light. The one caution: golden pothos is toxic to cats and dogs. Keep it out of reach of pets.
9. Bamboo Palm (Chamaedorea seifrizii)
The bamboo palm filters benzene and formaldehyde from indoor air and acts as a natural humidifier similar to the Boston fern, it adds moisture to the surrounding air while cleaning it. In Pakistan’s dry winter months or in air-conditioned rooms, this makes a real difference in comfort.
Bamboo palms like indirect light and consistently moist soil. They’re non-toxic to pets, which puts them in a smaller category on this list. Their thin, feathery fronds give a tropical look to living rooms and bedrooms. Place one in a corner with decent indirect light and water it regularly they’re not particularly difficult to maintain.
10. Dracaena (Dracaena spp.)

11. Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens)
The areca palm filters xylene and toluene from indoor air and was rated one of the most effective overall air-cleaning plants by Dr. Bill Wolverton based on total pollutant removal. It also releases a significant amount of moisture into the air, which helps in dry indoor environments.
Areca palms prefer bright, indirect light and need regular watering during the warmer months. They can grow up to 2 metres (6–7 feet) indoors and are non-toxic to both pets and children making them one of the safer large plants for family homes. A bright corner in a living room or near a window that gets good light is the right spot for one.
12. Gerbera Daisy (Gerbera jamesonii)
The gerbera daisy removes benzene and trichloroethylene from indoor air and is one of the few flowering plants on the NASA list. Most air-purifying plants are foliage-only; the gerbera daisy produces bright blooms in orange, pink, yellow, and red that actually make a room look more alive.
Gerbera daisies need more light than most plants on this list they do best on a sunny windowsill and need regular watering. They’re not the most low-maintenance option, but for kitchens and living rooms in Pakistani homes with good natural light, they add colour and clean the air at the same time.
13. Philodendron (Philodendron spp.)
Philodendron species remove formaldehyde from indoor air and come in three main varieties commonly used as houseplants: Heartleaf Philodendron (Philodendron cordatum), Selloum Philodendron (Philodendron bipinnatifidum), and Elephant Ear Philodendron (Philodendron domesticum).
The Heartleaf Philodendron trails and climbs good for shelves and desk edges. The Selloum has large, lobed leaves and works as a floor plant in bigger rooms. 16. Florist’s Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium)
The florist’s chrysanthemum filters ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene from indoor air covering four of the most common household pollutants tracked in the NASA study. That makes it one of the highest-performing plants on the entire list in terms of pollutant range.
Chrysanthemums need bright light and regular watering. They bloom in autumn and winter, producing flowers in red, yellow, white, and pink. They’re seasonal they won’t bloom year-round but during their blooming period, they’re both effective air cleaners and genuinely good-looking plants for a living room or entrance.
17. Warneckei (Dracaena deremensis)
Warneckei removes benzene, trichloroethylene, and xylene from indoor air and is identifiable by its striped leaves dark green with white or grey banding running lengthwise. It belongs to the Dracaena family and performs similarly to other varieties in that group.
Warneckei tolerates low to medium indirect light and handles dry air well, which makes it a practical choice for air-conditioned offices in Pakistan. It grows slowly, stays compact, and fits on a desk or shelf without taking over the space. As with other Dracaena plants, it’s toxic to cats and dogs.
Do Plants Work Better Than Air Purifiers?
No plants do not clean air faster than a mechanical air purifier. A 2019 study published in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology calculated that you’d need somewhere between 10 and 1,000 plants per square metre of floor space to match the air-cleaning rate of a standard air purifier. That’s not a realistic number for any home.
That said, the comparison isn’t quite fair. Plants and air purifiers don’t do the same thing, and they’re not really competing with each other.
Plant Advantages
Plants absorb pollutants continuously through their leaves, their roots, and the microbial activity in their soil. They produce oxygen. They increase indoor humidity. They reduce stress in ways that no machine can. And they do all of this without drawing a single unit of electricity.

Plant Limitations
Plants are slow. They cannot handle a sudden spike in indoor pollution cooking fumes, a gas leak, heavy smoke from a neighbour’s fire the way an air purifier can. They also require regular care: watering, sunlight, repotting, occasional fertilising. Some are toxic to pets and children. And it’s worth noting that the NASA study was conducted in sealed, controlled laboratory chambers real-world performance in open, ventilated homes is meaningfully lower.
Air Purifier Advantages
A HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter removes 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns (μm) in size dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and fine particulate matter (PM2.5). High Efficiency
A good air purifier achieves 4–5 Air Changes per Hour (ACH) in a standard-sized room meaning the entire room’s air volume passes through the filter four to five times every hour. No plant or group of plants can do that.
Air Purifier Limitations
Air purifiers cost money to run and maintain. Filter replacements especially genuine HEPA filters cost between PKR 3,000 and PKR 15,000 depending on the brand and model, and need replacing every 6–12 months. Most air purifiers produce a steady background noise. And they don’t produce oxygen, increase humidity, or make a room feel better to be in.
Combined Approach
Use both together. Run an air purifier in rooms where you spend the most time the bedroom and living room and keep 2–3 air-purifying plants in each room alongside it. The air purifier handles rapid particle removal and pollution spikes; the plants handle steady VOC absorption, humidity, and oxygen throughout the day and night.
This combination is practical for Pakistani homes. The plants reduce the workload on the air purifier, which extends filter life and lowers the frequency of filter replacements. It’s also a more balanced solution better air and a more liveable space, rather than just a machine running in the corner.

How Else Can You Improve Indoor Air Quality at Home?
There are 6 straightforward ways to improve indoor air quality beyond keeping plants.
Open windows daily. Even 10–15 minutes in the morning flushes out overnight pollutant buildup and brings in fresh air. Cross-ventilation opening windows on opposite sides of the home works best. Yes, this applies even in Karachi’s summer heat; early morning air is cooler and significantly cleaner than what builds up indoors overnight.
Use exhaust fans when cooking. Gas stoves produce carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and fine particulate matter every time they’re used. A kitchen exhaust fan or chimney venting to the outside removes these fumes before they spread through the home.
